The Historical Roots of Vidhan Soudha

The story of Vidhan Soudha begins in 1951, just a few years after India gained independence. The then Chief Minister of Mysore State, Kengal Hanumanthaiah, envisioned a building that would reflect the pride of the Kannada people and the dignity of the democratic process. His dream was to construct a structure that was not only functional but also inspirational—a true representation of Indian tradition and national identity.

At that time, the state’s administrative offices were housed in Attara Kacheri, a red colonial-era building located opposite where Vidhan Soudha stands today. Hanumanthaiah felt that a new legislative building was necessary—one that would break away from colonial influence and showcase indigenous architecture and heritage.

Foundation and Construction

The foundation stone for Vidhan Soudha was laid by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on July 13, 1951. Construction began soon after and took nearly five years, officially completing in 1956.

It was built entirely with local granite sourced from quarries around Bengaluru. The construction was carried out by more than 5,000 laborers and 1,500 skilled artisans under the leadership of architect B.R. Manickam and with direct involvement from Hanumanthaiah himself, who often sketched changes by hand and oversaw architectural decisions.

Architectural Marvel

Vidhan Soudha is a stunning blend of Dravidian, Rajasthani, Chola, and Indo-Saracenic architectural styles, making it a unique and grand representation of Indian design traditions. With over 300 rooms, the building houses the Legislative Assembly, Legislative Council, and various government offices.

Key features include:

• A massive central dome with the State Emblem of India (the Lion Capital of Ashoka).

• Four minarets on the corners.

• Over 60 feet high grand staircases at the front with 12 granite columns.

• An inscription above the entrance: "Government Work is God’s Work."

The total cost of construction was approximately ₹1.75 crore—a significant amount at the time.

Today, Vidhan Soudha is not only a historical monument but an active center of state governance. It continues to host legislative sessions and important political events. The building is beautifully lit on weekends and public holidays, attracting visitors and tourists from around the world.

In 2005, a mirror image of the Vidhan Soudha was constructed across the road and named the Vikasa Soudha, intended to provide more space for administrative functions.
