Several districts in the Malnad and Coastal regions of Karnataka are experiencing heavy rainfall, leading to flooding and disruptions to normal life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts, including Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu, due to the forecast of heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rainfall.
Karnataka’s scenic regions—Karavali (Coastal Karnataka), Shivamogga, Chikmagaluru, Kodagu, and Uttara Kannada—are currently experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall, making travel to these regions unsafe at the moment.
While these districts are known for their lush landscapes, waterfalls, and monsoon beauty, current weather conditions have led to waterlogging, landslides, road blockages, and disrupted public transport. Here's what you need to know before planning a trip.
1. Karavali (Coastal Karnataka):
Including popular destinations like Mangaluru, Udupi, and Karwar, the coastal belt is witnessing continuous rainfall. Coastal roads and highways are slippery and some low-lying areas are flooded.
2. Shivamogga:
The gateway to the Western Ghats is seeing overflowing rivers and landslide warnings, especially in Sagar, Thirthahalli, and Agumbe regions.
3. Chikmagaluru:
With heavy downpours in hill stations like Mullayanagiri, Kemmangundi, and Sringeri, several routes are closed due to fallen trees and landslides.
4. Kodagu (Coorg):
Kodagu is under orange alert. Travel to Madikeri and surrounding areas is not advised as rivulets are overflowing and landslide-prone zones are under watch.
5. Uttara Kannada:
Heavy rains have impacted popular tourist zones like Gokarna, Dandeli, and Sirsi. Forest areas and hilly roads are at risk due to continuous rainfall.
Risk of Landslides: Many ghat sections and hill roads are slippery and prone to landslides.
Road Closures: NH-66, Charmadi Ghat, and Agumbe Ghat sections may face periodic closures.
Flooded Rivers: Many rivers in Malnad and Coastal Karnataka are flowing above danger level.
Poor Visibility & Traffic Jams: Rain reduces visibility drastically on narrow hilly roads.

The Karnataka Disaster Management Authority has urged people to avoid non-essential travel to:
Kodagu
Chikmagaluru
Shivamogga
Udupi
Uttara Kannada
Schools and colleges in many parts of these districts have declared holidays due to red and orange alerts.
As per IMD forecasts, heavy rainfall is expected to continue for the next 2–3 days. However, the intensity may reduce by the end of the week. Always check for real-time weather reports before making any travel decision.
While Karnataka’s monsoon offers mesmerizing views, your safety should always come first. For now, it's strongly recommended to avoid travel to Karavali, Shivamogga, Chikmagaluru, Kodagu, and Uttara Kannada until the weather stabilizes.
Stay safe. Stay updated.
